As October rolls in and breast cancer awareness campaigns, our very own Poonam (MySeema Partner, COO, Nurse Practitioner) thought it would be a suitable time to share a personal anecdote.

"Unfortunately, in today's culture, our day-to-day is hectic, busy and overwhelming. We often de-prioritize our health in all of that. Keeping track of your health is the key to prevention, which inspired me to help build MySeema.

Breast cancer became very "real" when my cousin (38 yoa) was diagnosed. She endured two years of chemo, radiation, with multiple extensive surgeries. A few weeks ago, I found myself in a fearful position by feeling discomfort in my left breast. After working out the area would ache, and I wasn't able to sleep on that side. My husband, pushed me to get it checked, even thought I was hesitant.

I scheduled to see my OB, obviously worried to hear terrible news. But, I had to practice what I preach. Sitting through the visit, I couldn't' silence the fearful thoughts in my head. Unfortunately, the fibrotic tissue (from breastfeeding) made it difficult to tell. So they ordered a diagnostic mammogram.

I went right away feeling guilty to miss a mandatory meeting, but it was necessary. While waiting, worst case scenario planning started. I called my husband and was reviewing things for a bit, then her stopped me with some perspective.

The mammogram and ultrasound was completed, and Radiologist gave good news. I was not off the hook though, he still stressed the need for regular screenings."

A few lessons:

  1. Paying attention to our bodies is not enough, we must take action
  2. If you don't know ask a trusted source
  3. Holistically we need to stay on top of our mental/physical health. Finding ways to de-stress, eat mindfully, exercise, and practice positive thinking is crucial

MySeema was created for those who find this whole process nerve-wracking, for those who are unsure they can be on top of their health on their own. It was born out of a true passion, based on personal experiences and fears, to help others take control of their health. The service provides a trusted and clinically experienced companion, one that will always offer positive encouragement and support along the journey.

"I hope that this story inspires you, to keep up with your annual screenings, listen to your bodies, and take action!" - Poonam, Shaz, Suhanee
